David Bolen Details the Multi-Camera, Mixed-Format Workflow of Primetime

In an Oct. 21 American Cinematographer account, David Bolen explains how Primetime combined Arri Alexa 35 footage with a 1982 Sony DXC-M2 tube camera and concealed Panasonic DVX100s. The team captured hidden-camera feeds for both the finished film and the control-room monitors seen by actors, while selected Alexa footage was printed to 16mm and scanned back for its final texture. These are production decisions for one film, not new camera launches.

GLOBAL IMAGING BRIEF

Why it matters

Analysis: The case shows that mixed formats require planning beyond color matching: capture, playback, on-set monitoring, film-out and final grading must support both the story and actors' interactions. Other productions should test format conversions and monitor feeds against their own schedule, budget and image goals.
