SMART Photonics and GF plan an open-access silicon/InP foundry service
A September 21 announcement describes a joint foundry service combining GlobalFoundries' silicon platform with SMART Photonics' indium-phosphide photonic circuits. General availability is targeted for the second half of 2027, not immediate volume access.
GLOBAL IMAGING BRIEF
Why it matters
Analysis: bringing active optical components closer to silicon manufacturing could simplify supplier coordination for optical links. Coupling loss, thermal behavior, packaging yield and qualification timing still determine whether the integration pays off.
Full perspective
The companies describe flip-chip integration of InP lasers and semiconductor optical amplifiers into a silicon cavity. This is an announced manufacturing roadmap, not evidence that customers already have the combined service in general production.
Analysis: plan around the qualification gates
Design teams should request interface rules, design-kit maturity, optical and electrical test coverage, and a clear allocation of responsibility between die fabrication and packaging. Announced availability is only one milestone: a buyer still needs its own environmental, lifetime and supply qualification. Existing alternative suppliers should remain in the risk plan until the integrated route is proven for the application.
