Sony Details IMX742 Sensor for Single-Use Endoscope Development

Sony announced the IMX742, a 1.00 x 1.00 mm CMOS sensor with about 0.51 effective megapixels and on-sensor digital output. Sony reports transmission over a 5 m AWG44 cable in its evaluation environment and plans sample shipment in November 2026. The component is not itself a medical device.

GLOBAL IMAGING BRIEF

Why it matters

Analysis: A small digital-output sensor may give endoscope designers more flexibility in tip diameter and cable routing. Any clinical-device performance, infection-control benefit or procedural efficiency must be established by the completed device and its own validation; Sony says this component has not been evaluated or approved for medical applications.

Sony's 5 m result was measured in its own environment using AWG44 cable. Samples are planned, and the sensor is a component rather than an approved medical device.
