Printed Color-Router Arrays Redirect More Light Toward Sensor Pixels in Lab Tests

An Oct. 27 optics.org report describes a SUTD-led research team's polymer-nanopillar color router for image sensors. Instead of absorbing unwanted wavelengths like a conventional color filter, the array redirects colors toward designated pixels. The researchers reported nearly 90% routing efficiency in simulation and about 70% in fabricated one-square-millimeter arrays; camera-scale sensor integration and repeatable manufacturing remain future work.

GLOBAL IMAGING BRIEF

Why it matters

Analysis: Redirecting rather than discarding photons may improve future low-light capture, but this is a laboratory result, not a commercial sensor specification. Off-axis response, color leakage and foundry-compatible replication are the key remaining tests.
