UT Southwestern Describes Multi-Immersion Microscope for Flexible 3D Imaging

In a Nov. 5 research announcement, UT Southwestern described a multi-immersion oblique plane microscope, or miOPM, reported in Nature Methods. The light-sheet platform can switch among oil-, water- and air-immersion objectives; an adjustable zoom element helps maintain imaging performance as the immersion environment changes. The team demonstrated imaging of live cells, tissue and multiwell plates on research systems. It is a laboratory platform, not an approved clinical diagnostic instrument.

GLOBAL IMAGING BRIEF

Why it matters

Analysis: Accommodating different objectives within one light-sheet platform may simplify experiments across specimen scales. Laboratories should compare resolution, field of view, phototoxicity and changeover time for each immersion mode; the announcement does not quantify cost savings.
